Media@IDASA

Media@idasa is responsible for producing all of Idasa’s media – print, broadcast and electronic – as well as managing the organisation’s information and dissemination strategy. It does this through five areas of work:

1) The Publishing Department, which provides a comprehensive publishing service to the organisation, producing a range of print media, including books, promotional material, reports, occasional papers, newsletters and magazines for all of Idasa’s programmes, as well as for outside clients.

2) E-Communications, which is responsible for ensuring the exchange of electronic information between the different programmes within Idasa, maintaining the website and producing an internal and an electronic external newsletter on Idasa’s work.

3) Democracy Radio, which is currently working on a Youth Development Programme to bring together young people from different community groups to produce radio dramas that deal with issues and themes relevant to their daily lives.

4) Media for Democracy Training: Media@idasa provides training for journalists, as well as researchers/practitioners/government officials, to enable them to use the mass media to promote democracy, through participative workshops. With Idasa’s Governance and AIDS Programme, it releases electronic News Flashes to aid journalist in covering the HIV/AIDS pandemic. And its Municipal Journalism Programme trains local journalists to effectively cover local government and municipal affairs (see the wordonthestreet website).

5) The Resource Centre houses a vast repository of information about democracy, government, human rights and elections and provides specialised information on democracy to Idasa staff and the community at large to help promote a well informed citizenry.

6) Cape Town Democracy Centre (CTDC) now houses Lobby Books, 6 Spin Street Restaurant as well as the newly renovated Democracy Centre conference venue.
